UPDATE JUNE 2, 2008:
it seems that the statcounter code has changed and we have to make some changes on our side.  These changes may not be available for some time though, I will update the parent topic with this info.

Apologies for the inconvenience.
---------------------------------------

Statistics are very important for any website owner, forum organizer, or blogger. Here on Lefora, we provide organizers and members with lots of juicy stats.  But as an organizer, you may have a larger appetite for more stats.  I'll show you how to get up and running with free web stat packages - StatCounter.

What's so valuable about visitor stats?
As any good forum organizer or blogger can tell you, it's valuable to understand how much traffic your site gets on a daily basis, where they come from, how long they stay, and where they leave.  This will help make sure you are providing content that people are looking for.  On either of these stat packages, you'll be able to see:
  • How many visitors come to your site a day (charted over time)
  • Where they came from (on a map)
  • How they arrived on your site (either from another website link or a search term).
    • This is the most important as it will let you know which sites are providing lots of traffic to your forum by linking to you (maybe from a popular blog?).  So you should reach out to them and thank them and see if you can form a relationship by linking back to them as well.
    • Also, it's important to know which keywords visitors use to click through to your site - so you'll get an idea of what they're expecting when they click your forum through a search engine.
  • And various stats about the web browsers they use, how long they stayed, and on what paged the exited.
StatCounter:
  1. Visit http://www.statcounter.com/register.php, create an account and enter your personal info.  Click "Register My Account"
  2. Select your timezone, Click "Proceed & Add A Project"
  3. Select Basic or Advanced and click "Next"
  4. Enter your Forum's name and URL.  Select a category from the drop down.
    • Select how often you want a visitor to be considered 'unique',I like 6 hours.  As if somebody comes back to the site after being away for 6 hours, I consider that a very separate visit.
    • Block your IP address if you want (so you don't skew your stats).  How do you know what your IP address is?  Visit http://whatismyip.com/.
    • Leave 'public stats' unchecked unless you want everybody to view your stats.
    • Click "Next"
  5. Click "Configure & Install Code".  Select the type of counter you wish to have displayed on your page.  My Preference is the "Invisible Counter".  Click "Next"
  6. Leave the default options for Not wanting an install guide, and not checking html only counter.  Click "Next".
  7. Copy the code they provide, we're gonna paste this into your forum.
Create a 'Stats' Widget for your Forum:
  1. As a forum Organizer, click "Forum Admin" on your top Menu Bar.  Select the "Widgets" tab.
  2. Add a new widget, the HTML Content Widget.
    1. You can choose to leave your widget without a title and header bg image, this way it will be 'hidden'.
    2. Paste your stat code from either stat package (or you can paste both, the order doesn't matter.)
    3. Click "Submit"
  3. Click "Save"
  4. Congratulations, you're now collecting tons of traffic stats on all the visitors to your site!

hey chief, i've followed the script, but it doesn't collect any stats, and my headlines/ forum pages displays "Code corrupted. Insert fresh copy." so i've repasted the code into the html widget several times, but it still gives the same error. statcounter seems to work fine collecting stats on my own site. any ideas?
ps: i tried your earlier post about google analytics and got the same error message displayed.
many thanks

thanks, we used to support google analytics, but stopped because it conflicted with our own stats.

As for statcounter, I just gave it a test and it worked for me, would you be able to send me a PM (private message) or email with the stat code you're trying to embed. My email is 'chief -at- lefora.com'

Statcounter is collecting stats. The first stats were visits to the http:/mysite.lefora.com/admin/theme/widgets/ from a dynamic IP 75.42.252.241 in TX which was the start of Statcounter records. So many thx. fyi my headline and forum pages still say "Code corrupted. Insert fresh copy."

But Chief, I did everything you said, and it just does not collect stats. I do not have any problems on my other website, I am familiar (and very impressed!) with Statcounter, but on my Leeskring forum it says Code corrupted. Insert fresh copy. ANd the stats does not show.

Please help, I just love Stats!

Statcounter is great.  However, can anyone recommend any other free counters out there?

Are their problems running 2 or more counters at the same time?

Thanks in advance.

When you said we stop supporting google analytics, does this mean it won't run properly on the individual forums and the individual admins can't use it properly and therefore not recommended or we still can.  Kindly clarify.  Thanks in advance.

t-cell, it simply wont work is the problem, this is due to technical limitations of google anayltics and is out of our hands I'm afraid.

The regular StatCounter sugestion in the original post is probably still the best approach.

We are curretnly working on expanding the available options for statistics.

Once the statcounter is loaded, where will I (the admin) see the stats if I didn't want the stats shown publicly?

Thanks,

Statcounter has no relation to lefora, so I'm afraid we can't help you out, but as several othera lefora members use statcounter perhaps one of them will post an answer.
Alternatively try statcounters support.

Figured it out. It's all viewable on the statcounter site, not on my forum.

I've followed Chief's instructions on creating a stats widget for my forum, however I got a little confused when I tried to paste the code into the widget. He mentions ..."add a new widget, the HTML Content Widget." Is that the specific name of a widget that should be in the left column that I should drag to the right? I don't see it on my screen but I see "Custom HTML" as an option in the left column. Is that the same thing? I've tried pasting the code into a "Custom HTML" widget but the counter doesn't show up nor is the link made back to statcounter. I swear I've copied it exactly. Is there some code I should enter before I pasted the code? Thanks for any suggestions. I am not computer savvy at all!

@ewigginton, it is the 'Custom HTML' widget, it's just changed names.  When you drag it over, click edit and paste the statcounter code, then save it.  you'll have to wait a day or two before statcounter starts tracking your site.  you won't see anything on yoursidebar, as statcounter just tracks pageviews, it doesn't display anything.

I'm having problems with loading statcounter...I did it on Saturday night, by Monday I had some stats. I had stats on Tuesday, then nothing more. No visitors noted, but I know I myself was a visitor today as I was away from home and loaded the forum home page.

I tried to reset settings. Nothing changed. I even tried different counters that I found here on the faq page...24 counter. None of them would pick up visitors or IPs. I finally was able to load a widget that gave me a map, and the number of visitors online, but still no data on statscounter.

The only IP blocked was mine, but no other members' IPs show up either.

I'm a real newbie with this. I've read the statscounter forum but there was no help there.

Any chance I could get a hand with this? I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'd really like to see if we are getting visitors to this forum and when.

Thanks!

From my experience, statcounter has compatibility issues with lefora.  Don't know exactly when that happened because from my reading from previous posts, it has no previous problems with lefora.

Try using other free counters out there.  Use one that offers also offers HTML code versions.  Also, not all are compatible with lefora as you've mentioned.

Currently, I am using sitemeter.com.  No problems, so far.

Hope that helps.
