Membership Controls & Moderator access

A number of forums have been asking us for permission controls. From requiring membership, to enabling co-admins and moderators.

Yesterday night, we release new controls in your Forum Admin Panel's "Forum Settings" page.  Admins now have the ability to:

  • Require Membership in order to post (though we recommend leaving your forum open)
  • Ability to add co-admins that have full acess to the forum
  • Ability to add moderators that don't have access to the Forum Admin Panel, but can moderate posts by flagging them as spam, moving them to other categories, and making posts sticky.

Posting Options - Membership  Required

If you choose, you can require that people who post to your forum must sign up as a member.  However, we belive information and communcation should be open and easy to participate in.  So we recommend to leave your forum open.  We understand concerns about spam and trolls, but we've built out lots of intelligent tools to prevent that.  We automatically detect spam across all forums and put it into your 'spam box', just like gmail and hotmail.  In the cases where we don't catch spam, we allow admins and moderators to flag it.  As for trolls, we allow the community to moderate with the thumb up/down buttons.  If posters get enough thumbdowns, they will be collapsed by default.

Forum Moderators & Admins

You can now add co-admins and moderators to your fourm.  Just start typing a username in the field and we'll populate a list of members in your forum that begin with the letters you're typing.  Click 'Add', then choose if you want them to be a Moderator or an Admin.

Moderators can:

  • Delete posts
  • Mark posts as SPAM
  • Change the category of a thread
  • Make posts sticky (and remove sticky)
Admins have all of the options listed above plus full access to the Admin Panel (changing categories, chaging themes, adding widgets, etc.)  Soon, admins and moderators will have the ability to ban members as well.

And how about move a reply to a new topic?

hey matias, we may build a feature in the future to start a new topic off a thread, at the moment, we suggest just copying the reply and pasting it into a new topic.

hey stellbow, we've changed the interface around, and now you should see a full listing of all members in your fourm when under the admin/mod heading. It may take a few seconds to load. Can you see a listing of users or is it just blank for you? What web browser are you running?

this is what the new screen looks like, so i'm guessing the username, mod, admin box doesn't pop up for you? We'll test on our end.

On our site... http://orangecountyfixed.com it shows that I am an admin at the top of the site along with three other members. I however only have access to delete, move and sticky threads/posts. Which means I am just a moderator correct? Is there any way to add/change the settings that show who is an admin/moderator?

When admins get the ability to ban bad users, will moderators be able to do so as well or will that feature only be for admins?

hi, looking at your profile, i don't see you as admin for the site, so you must be a modertaor. You should contact the admin of your forum if you should have admin vs. mod. rights.

we may role it out in stages with just admins first, then allow the admin to grant rights to mods (further out in the future).

At first, it will probably just be admins as 'banning', hopefully, shouldn't be a common occurrence on your forum.

nice suggestion, we're working on something related to this with 'roles' for members in the community. This won't be available until after the summer though.

I cannot find that forum mod and admin box anywhere, at least not one like you linked. I found one under the membership tab in the forum admin page that uses drop down lists, but doesnt list all of our members, nor does it have a search box. My friend and I use our forum as a place for our buds in a game to gather and chat. Literally JUST set it up. We have three registered members when as I write this but the Memberships tab only shows the founder and myself (an admin). How can I change the third persons roles if I want to? ( we will have more members coming so I need to know this for the future)

The situation has changed. We now have more members and it seems every person is showing up on that list BUT that same third member. Its not a big issue atm because I don't plan making him a mod any time soon but you might want to look into it as a possible bug.
