More control over category security and group memberships

Back when we used EAMPED for our forum hosting, we had the ability to create Public forums as well as Private forums. Besides admins and mods, we had "preferred members" who could access the Private forums whereas regualr members could only access the public forums.

I know we can kind of do this with the Admin only option, but we do not want to make "preferred members" admins (or mods) in order to simple have a private group of forums.

Any chance on the horizon? Thanks!

yes, full chance on the horizon.  We're currently working on membership privacy controls (just yeterday we added 'membership approval needed by an admin' so that you can approve members before they start posting.  Soon, we'll start work on fully private forums and we have a few other privacy features in mind that aren't avaialble on other software like phpbb.  We'll keep everybody updated.

What about integrating membership with other directory services? For example, we would like our current students to use the forum, but would like to use our university user name and password.

We have plans to work with open authentication services in the future, such as openid.

Any news about this subject?

I started this forum to discuss stratagies about a game. But after i installed it all, i noticed that everybody can see all the topics, without any authorisation. Is it possible, soon, to make privat categories only vieuwed by my moderators?

we're working on fully 'private' forums and should have them available over the next few weeks. Shoot me an email if you have any questions 'chief -at- lefora.com'

This is a must have, I've started a forum in relation to a game, and would be really useful to have this feature.

omg! I just realised, the extent of this problem - it's not PRIVATE at all! I first read this as not being able to add a public section, I just started up a forum.

Well this is pretty useless for my purpose, until the public/private sections are added.

Really looking forward to the addition of this feature. Apart from that the forums are great, and it's good to see someone out there trying to innovate forums. Keep up the good work, I'm hoping to see great things from you guys.

Just a question I made a few people moderators of the forums, but they see no power that they have. They can't edit any post's or anything like that. Is that typical?

Currently editing a post is only available to the user who made the post. We are working on allowing moderators and admins to edit a post. So for the time being it is typical for a moderator to not be able to edit a post.

When will this be available? I think that it's a very important job, and so I really need to know when I'll be able to use it. Another forum that we had crashed becaise of this problem, and I know the technology is available on plenty of other sites.

to develop this feature, we're listening to feedback and watching user behaviors, it's not a technology problem. More info posted here:

http://support.lefora.com/2008/01/24/can-i-edit-threads-and-posts/99989/

We recommend replying to a post if you need to correct a member's post, as for cleaning up inappropriate content, we're working on filters for that.

Is there any news on group memberships?

Having private categories for member groups is possibly another deal breaker for many commercial uses. I need to allow coaching clients into a private member group. Alternatively I could go the route of using a membership script such as amember.

I love what you have done here, but in order to make this the killer app for forums, such as basecamp is to project management, there really needs to be some additional features.

thanks jdog for this feedback as well. With the ability to create multiple forums on lefora, and control membership and privacy settings across these different forums (members would always use the same account) - does that offer a solution that works for you? You could have multiple private forums and decide which members to let in, just like on other forums you can have multiple sub-forums or groups for different privacy controls.

I would much rather be able to control security within my single forum.  I have no need to have mutliple forums.
I would like to have:
1) To be able to set an area that is admin/moderator only, rather than having a seperate forum.
2) Set moderator rights to certain categories etc
Seems easy.... but I don't know your back end. This is still the BEST forum software out there!

Greetings all. Love your forum software guys, it's innovative, easy on the eyes and the whole sidebar and widget thing works like a charm.

However, I am in the same boat as the guys that posted before. I saw this and loved it to create a community for a game, but... we DO need a "public access" section (for info on our clan, recruitment, etc) and a "private, members only" area where your guys and gals can post strategies and intel and stuff.

As it is, correct me if I am mistaken, there is only "everyone sees everything" or "nobody sees nuthing unless registered" options, yes?

Would be GREAT if you guys can include some more privacy options in the future. Great job with the forums.
