Why is the default editor the text editor? To guide people to make posts simple?
The visual editor's not that complex, so wouldn't it make life easier for newbies to have those options available from the start, rather than having to find the link to switch to the visual editor?
Also, the text is a bit smaller on the visual editor. Could it be the same size or larger?
Finally, the visual editor doesn't give the option to upload files or pics or embed videos - this is only on the text editor. For simplicity, shouldn't these features be available on both?

Wait a minute, i may have to take that back about the text editor being the default. Does the system store your preference once you make a choice?
In any case, my other comments remain valid.

The system does store your preference. The text editor is simple to use and is smart at auto-detecting media. The rich editor doesn't have these advantages so we don't default to it.
There's one way to change the size of the text in the text editor so it's easy for you to read, just hit CTRL + (the plus key) in your browser to make the text larger.
