Topic: Links In A New Window

I just tried to insert a link opening on a new page in the Visual Editor and it didn't work. I checked the link, and although it says 'Open link in a new window', it opens on the same page.

Also, when i created the link, i'd initially pasted the url for the link into the editor box, highlighted the url, then pressed the 'Insert/edit link button' to change the name and get it to open in a new window. However though i typed a different Title in, this didn't replace the url i'd pasted originally. The url simply became the link - the Title i'd entered was disregarded.

For simplicity sake, we treat all links in a post to open in the same window (even if you select that option in the visual editor).  It conforms with standard web behavior and avoids confusion to other members if they're going open a new window or stay in the same window.

However, if you want to open a link in a new window (any website), just CTRL click it and it will open in a new window.

That's ok, but then why provide the option in your 'Insert/edit link' box?

This can waste time for someone who's not aware of what you do and is trying to work out what's going on (like me!).

Also, what about replacement of the url with the Title? That's not used either?

Actually reconsidering what i just said about all links opening in the same window being ok, it's not ideal, although i understand it's simpler.

Reason is, it's fairly common for links to open in new windows on other sites. The idea is that people retain a link to the original site, yet are also able to look at the new site. When they've finished with the new site, they can simply close the window to return to the original site.

With all links opening in the new window, this isn't so simple: people would have to use their back buttons or enter the address of the original site again. Also, i would've thought Lefora would want people to stay on the forums rather than possibly wander off?

'title' is a flag used within the anchor link, it's not something you would see in your post.  It sounds like you want to change the text that's linked.

To create a link, type some text, highlight it, then click the 'link' icon (looks like a chain).  To remove a link, highlight it, then click the broken chain icon to remove a link.  So if you're link is screwed up, remove the link and create a new one.

In fact, i just noticed that another (nonlefora) forum i'm a member of defaults links to new windows, so that it remains in the background.

what's the issue you're having exactly? (there were a few derivations mentioned above)
