I'm having problems setting up a CNAME record for my custom domain.

As part of our custom domain name service:
http://support.lefora.com/2008/04/19/free-custom-domain-name-giveaway

We allow you to host your own domain name on your forum (instead of lefora.com). You will have to make changes to your domain's CNAME record in order for this to work (and we have to make changes on Lefora's side as well). Changing the CNAME on different hosts, can be a little confusing at first, so this topic will help answer any specific questions you have.

== Setting your CNAME Record ==

===========
Method 1, setting a 'subdomain' such as forum.exammple.com for your forum:

For instance, if you want to set http://forum.example.com to be used for http://example.lefora.com.

1) Create a CNAME record for 'forum'
2) the value should be 'example.lefora.com'

After you make the change, you will need to let Lefora know so we can make changes on our side, just follow the contact instructions here: http://support.lefora.com/2008/04/19/free-custom-domain-name-giveaway/ Please include your current lefora domain name and the new domain name you would like to use.

===========
Method 2, setting your main domain, such as www.exammple.com for your forum:

For instance, if you want to set http://www.example.com to be used for http://example.lefora.com.

Step 1A) Create a CNAME record for 'www'
Step 1B) the value should be 'example.lefora.com'
Step 2) Setup URL Forwarding for example.com (without www) to point to www.example.com

After you make the change, you will need to let Lefora know so we can make changes on our side, just follow the contact instructions here: http://support.lefora.com/2008/04/19/free-custom-domain-name-giveaway/ Please include your current lefora domain name and the new domain name you would like to use.

Hi cherry, who did you purchase your domain name from (like godaddy, or yahoo), you will have to make a CNAME record on their service. If you tell us who you purchased it from, we can offer more help.

thanks i got it from windstream ... they are my internet carrier ... and that is where my web site is hosted ... i think i got it done right now ... i did it once but i missed spelled something and had to redo it ... now i have to wait another 24 hours til it will take effect ...

i do have a question on this will it change the address that i need to give to people to some to my forum ... for instance my current forum is day-dreamers.lefora.com and the CNAME that i created is games.bobbiebobbins.net now when it is all say and done will i need to give people the games.bobbiebobbins.net for them to find my site ... or will it work for both ???

just games.bobbiebobbins.net, technically the day-dreamers.lefora.com will work, but it's not a good practice for DNS internet routing to continue giving out.

  • 1) Create a CNAME record for 'forum'

chief, have mercy on me puhleeesse *cry*

our forum is http://pwteamrenegade.lefora.com/ and we wish to change it to teamrenegade.pw.net or teamrenegade.pw.ph

Hi lelex, those are two different methods your combining.

So if you want teamrenegade.pw.net, that means you own pw.net. You'll have to create a CNAME record so the value of 'teamrenegade' points to a destination of your lefora forum (without http) 'pwteamrenegade.lefora.com'

After you make that change you should be all set, just let us know so we can flip some switches on our side. If you have any issues, please post a link to your domain host here so I can find out more information.

My provider (strato.de) does not allow for creating/modifying CNAME records. I can only forward to a static addresses via so-called A-Records (Address Resource Records). How can I proceed?

Sorry, custom domains only work with CNAME records. If we used A-Records, your forum would break as we upgrade service provders because it's tied to an IP address, not a dynamic location.

You can switch your domain providers to another service, such as godaddy.com

I'm trying to setup a CNAME, and coming from a technical background this process is ambiguous, so perhaps we can create a simple guide, and post it as a sticky. Ideally, it would have instructions for the top 5 hosting providers.. like the email whitelisting guides that show steps for outlook, hotmail, gmail, yahoo mail, etc.
I use 1and1 as my hosting company (not recommended for several reasons). While I'm waiting for it to update I will post my steps here:

1. Create a subdomain such as forum.yourwebsite.com.. A CNAME is NOT the same as a forwarded subdomain. 1and1 has a warning that these are advanced DNS settings, and use caution in changing them.

2. Note: Setting a domain or subdomain as a CNAME will stop associated email from working
DNS Settings (quote from 1and1 "edit DNS" admin panel)
Full functionality cannot be guaranteed if you choose DNS settings other than the original 1&1 settings, such as e-mail and web space. Click on Reset to return to the 1&1 default settings.

3. Follow these instructions on editing the DNS of the subdomain:

4. Here is the ambiguity. There is still the option (while DNS is updating anyway) of using either a FRAME or HTTP redirect on the subdomain. This part I find confusing.

thanks jdog, i linked to the godaddy and yahoo help files above, which are about 70% off all the domains that come through here.

on 1), that warning you are seeing is that you must remove any forwards (FRAME or HTTP). So in step 4, delete/remove all forwarders so that only a CNAME record exists - sites like godaddy even help you remove a conflict, it doesn't seem 1and1 does though.

Under CNAME settings there is a mandatory field named "Alias" I entered "askjdog.lefora.com"

Upon removing the forward (FRAME) it still requires a Destination, so I have set it to the
home directory of my website. 1and1 requires it to be one or the other.

I think this is done now.

Thanks.

for 1and1:  http://faq.1and1.com/domains/dns_settings/13.html

I just searched google.com for '1and1 cname' and that was the first result that popped up, which should work for other networks as well.  Just search for your domain provider and the word 'cname' and they'll probably have a help file for you.  You can add the term 'help' as well.

I don't understand any of this. My site is with "Fasthosts" or "UK Reg" Maybe they are the same. How do I go about doing this "CName" thing. Totally lost here....Feel like a blubbering fool. Where are CName settings to be found.

I found ZoneEdit and THINK I have registered.(Not sure how it works) I can log in but where do I go from there. Do I register my website? Then what???  Sooo confused. Would love to have www.waspink.com as my forum name but I am pulling out my hair at this stage. Is there anyone that I can get to do this for me?

hey wasp, here are a few questions:
1) What domain do you currently own?
2) Which service provider did you buy it from?  Please put a link to their website.

I can help you future with that info.
