On the Subject of "Ranks"
First, for what it's worth, I would like to officially express my interest in the topic (as already demonstrated by the creation of this thread).
second, i have some suggestions/requests for the design-- not that anyone has to listen to me. It's nothing that i havn't already seen done elsewhere, just somethings that i liked. I don't realy know what the designers and staff have in mind. This is just "if i were cool enough to design a site like this, this is what i'd try to do." If these are already included in the design plan, then just consider this my small vote of assent and a bit of encouragement.
-- post-influenced ranks: i understand this to be the most comonly accepted incarnation of "forum rank." i understand and apreciate their importance/significance in forums, i just hope that this isn't the only incernation that will be put into effect. It might also be good to let the admins edit the numbers associated with the ranks. 10 posts in one forum may mean something completely different in another.
-- non-post-influenced ranks: these might be more comperable to a status aside from admin, mod, founder, and menber. for example, i have a small regional social forum (not well developed at the moment). while it's is regionally based, it is infact more on the social side. in that light it might be nice to be able to tell people in the forum who is connected by "region" (technically a school), who is conected socially, and who has left the region but joined under it.
-- custom named ranks (named by the admin(s)): for themed forums and admins that just like to be creative. this might also make the implimentation of non-post-related ranks more widely applicable. (i'm personally more interested in this one.)
i realize that each of these by themselves are a tall order, not to mention all together. like i said. no one has to listen to me anyway. at the same time, i don't think that i have seen all of them together before, so that might put the lefora forums that step above other sites.
If by some small chance, i've hit on something original here and somebody's all like "good idea, but how would that work?" i have a more detailed idea in my head, so just ask. I don't pretend to be worthy or talented enough to design this site, but i do have some expierience with how computers and programmers tend to think.
Whatever the case, good luck guys and keep up the good work.
