When I access my forum without signing in, there is no "About" tab. But when I sign in, it's there looking the way I want it to. I can't find how to fix that in the Admin panel. How do I make it visible to guests? It's pretty integral to the functioning of the site....
How do I change privacy settings for the "About" tab?
If the 'about' page is empty, then it is hidden to non-admins, i assume you haven't edited your about page yet?
No, it's edited and shows up as desired when I'm logged in. I don't know whether or not normal members can see it but anyone not logged in definitely can't.
i just checked the page while not logged in and i was able to see it
there's still no tab in that screenshot though, and when i go there not logged in i can't get to that page. i noticed someone having the same problem posted here recently. i put everything that's on the about page in a new information section so it's not a big deal anymore but could it be a bug?
hey kristin, silly me, you're right. it seems non-members can view the page, but they don't see a link to the page in your header.
i'll open this as a bug, but it may take some time to get fixed as we're currently tied up with a few other things and this isn't critical. however, you can add a link to this page on your sidebar by using the 'Links' widget in the admin panel (under Appearances -> Sidebar), just paste this url as a link
ok thanks :)
good luck figuring everything out!
thanks,
and it shouldn't take too long, what i meant with 'critical', is that nothing on your forum is crashing :P - those we handle immediately. I figure this temporary work around should keep things running smoothly for you for the time being.
hi i'm having the same problem with the about tab.
outsiders cannot view it. only logged members can view it.
i want to allow everyone to view the about tab regardless they are logged in or not.
thank you

I can see the about tab on your homepage : http://in-famous.lefora.com/user/gateway/
Just couldn't access it because you set it up so that only admin approved members can see anything in your forum

That's the point, surely? The 'About' tab should be point of contact with prospective members... By the time they've registered as members the 'About' tab becomes useless.
If the site is set to 'private', then even the about tab is hidden. We recommend allowing the forum to be publicly viewable, but require membership to post.
You see ... the forum is a mmorpg guild forum. Basically game strategy, guides, contact information eg msn email contacts and so on are posted on it. We even have a thread for kos targets pk targets and so on.
If you are a gamer you will know these info are very private and meant to be seen by guild players only.
We do our own filtering on which player gets to join the guild and hence they will get forum access.
I we were to have an open forum, then everyone will be able to read what is inside, even our game enemies. Worse those spam companies will be able to take our email addresses and use it in their spam mail and so on.
Imo the "about" tab is supposed to be for visitors to know more about the forum before registering for it, in our case potential guild members can read up about our guild at the "about" tab to get to know more about us before deciding to join our guild or not. They do not need to know what is in the forum.
I hope you can give us the option to make the about private or public.
Thank you.

In my opinion, the best way for a prospective member to decide to register is if he or she can read the actual conversations in the forum.
Any admin or founder can just say anything on the about page just to lure prospective members to register then after registering, find out that it's just all hype or even a "rickrolled" type about page.
Other prospective members also would like to see how the founder, admins and moderators handle themselves and how they treat their members and you can only do that if they can read the conversations.
I do see the point of an option for admins to choose a public or private about page.
However, in the end it's really up to the lefora team if they want to give that option.
mav253, as we don't have any immediate plans to add an option like that, consider a few options:
1. How are people finding out about the forum? If it's private, then the must be getting a link from another website, or maybe you're emailing it out. You can include info about your forum on any site that links to it, or any emails you send out.
2. Use your forum description to explain what the forum is about.
3. Use custom domain name hosting with a site like yola.com. So you can have a frontpage of www.yoursite.com explaining what it is, and that would link to forum.yoursite.com which would be the private forum.
4. You could always 'hack' up your footer using CSS and embed an image that has more information on your forum (advanced).
