My Ideal Forum Features

Hi,

Some features that I think would be fantastic are as follows:

  1. Category separators are merely text boxes with no imbedded links in them, that merely describe the topics below it, with no post counts included.
  2. Categories are listed with subcategories indented in smaller text below them.
  3. An admin option to set where replies are posted to when a topic is initially started. I have threads that compile informational videos, links, and other topics that I like to keep together as a grouping for easy access by members without having to scroll through multiple responses between content....almost like a library. Right now I make a comment guest book and ask members to reply there, but because I cannot move their posts should they not understand that request or not read it, I am stuck with the post where it is, and others follow. Before you know it, the whole thread is messed up. If I could set where responses get posted to, then I could set up the comment guestbook, and have comments from the original thread automatically get posted to that area while still allowing the convienience of the posting member to post below that topic in which the post is about.
  4. Moderators ability to send warnings to members.
  5. A widget bar across the bottom of the screen to fill in the en=mpty space. Adding widgets only on the sidebar makes the page very long with a lot of dead area below the category listings.
  6. Members currently online instead of recently, with the option of showing avitars or not, thus if you choose to not show the avitars, more screen names could be shown as a list, and would only be present if currently online in that forum.
I'm sure as I use it more, more ideas will arise, but I have to tell you..I am very impressed with this place!

Thanks for everything.

Me again..LOL

Also:
  1. A "Return to top of page" link at the bottom of the category listings would be nice as well.
  2. A dump/recycle bin for deleted posts, so something can be retrieved if needed, and a place to move posts when deleting a category without having to post them in another current category.

I swear this is the last one.

When a member is banned, it is my understanding that they are only banned from your forum. Is their some way of attaching a notice with the screen name or email that that person was previously banned on another forum as a heads up to admins?

  • Good requests.. I also need the ability to move posts to a different topic by a moderator.
  • Warnings to users agreed
  • Dump/Recycle bin to retrieve deleted posts if needed.. also a great suggestion.

thanks kjt,
1 & 2, thanks for the feedback, we'll continue to improve this view
3. I'm not sure I exactly follow here. Let's say you make a topic that has a video, links, and some other content. If you want to ensure that people reply in the appropriate category, I would probably make this topic exist across multiple categories and lock it so nobody could reply. Then start new topics within each category saying 'comment on this video...', 'comments on these links...' and each of those could link to the master topic.
4. moderators warning members - we'll be building it soon
5. do you have an example of a page that doesn't look good? i checked out one of your forums and i did not see a very long sidebar. typically in an active post, that has 20+ replies, the content is longer then the sidebar.
6. we do have members currently online. Within the recently online widget, there is a green light on their avatar if they are online right now.
- and to this, you can add a chat widget, like www.chatango.com to offer realtime chat for all members currently online.

And for your second post
1. return to top link on the post is a good idea
2. and undelete is an option we'll build out in the future, but it's probably some ways off
3. banned reputation - we'll be doing more with reputation here, and that's a good idea, fortunally, there's only been a very small number of people actually banned by an admin on lefora.

@jdog
moderators can move topics, there is a drop down for them on the topic that allows them to move it.

thanks for this feedback, the features you suggest around more power to admins and moderators are coming in the future, we'll be publishing the next product roadmap later this week.
