Collapse Sidebar Topics list

Hi, my forum has 6 Category Groups with between 1 and 6 sub categories under each. This makes the sidebar very long.
Is there a way to collapse the tree to just the Category groups or even remove the sub groups from the sidebar widget?
I have searched here and in the CSS links to no avail.
Can't think of a way to do this with css, but how about this :
Put a weblinks widget in the sidebar with links to the category groups?
