Editing your own posts
Is it possible to let members edit their own posts for a longer period of time than 15 minutes, or remove the time limit completely?
Editing your own posts would be very useful for us. My dream solution would be a system that let admins set a "category wide" maximum editing period, as well as letting individual thread starters adjust it themselves.
For example, in a category for hot debates and discussion of real life issues, a short editing period would make sense. In others, like a "fact book" category we're setting up in our forum right now, an unlimited editing period would be nice, so that people could go back and edit their initial entries (much like a Wiki) at any point in time.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Kudos to Chief and Lefora for being so responsive, I have never experienced an admin team who takes communicating with their users so seriously. Keep it up!
thanks for the suggestion veanovia, the 15min rule is more of a philosophy we're trying to impart on lefora forums, so that post editing cannot be abused during a heated conversation - it protects speech from changing
In the future, we'd like to do more here, to allow members to append to their existing post and highlight the changes.
Well being an admin of a occasionally heated debate forum, I really like the 15 minute rule.
What about an unlimited time limit until the post has a reply? Even then, I would like to be able to see that the post has been edited.
Depending on the forum it can be a great feature (unlimited edit time). I am a member on another forum that is on vBulletin and editing the posts is unlimited, however it shows that it has been edited and when. This may be a stretch and I'm not sure if it is even possible but I'll ask anyways...
If someone edits a post, can lefora somehow save the original post and hide it? If someone chooses to view the original post they can click a small link somewhere on the post and the original post shows up. That way it isn't deleted and the original information can not be lost. Thus making it impossible to back down from a statement, while still leaving the option of editing posts for a responsible reason.
On our forum www.orangecountyfixed.com we have a for sale category. Some people put bike parts up for sale and they state a price. If they don't sell they often need to lower the price or edit their post. Without the ability to edit their post though, they just make another post and PM us to delete the old one. This is very time consuming and it gets old very quick.
If the above request is too much to ask, could it be possible to set time limits to certain categories within the forum? For example, in the lounge leave the 15min time limit. In the for sale category make it unlimited. Also make it possible for posters to delete their own post in certain categories like the for sale section only. That way if their part is sold or they find what they are looking for they can delete it themselves instead of PMing one of us, then us having to go find the original post and delete it. Again, unnecessary time wasted. I don't mean to compare lefora to vBulletin but this is how it is setup on there and it is great. I love Lefora and I back you guys 150%. I am not trying to turn Lefora into a vBulletin clone, just help bring things up to speed.
Thanks for reading all that. Again, lefora is backed 150% by me and all thousand of our members. Keep up the great work.
In the future, we'll have options for people to 'append' to their post, but that's sometime off, and still wouldn't solve the pricing changing/hiding issue.
There might be a 'clever' hack out there for you though. For instance, somebody could use their profile to list the price, and say something like 'click my profile to see the price', or embed some flash widget that allows them to change the content (not sure which widget can do that though).
I understand that's not the best solution to the problem though, so we'll keep this in the back of our mind when we make changes to this area of the site.
