Extra returns in posts and cant edit out
Hi cheif,
I am having a small issue that is driving me insane. (well more insane than I am currently!) Every time I post a message or copy a message, it doesnt seem to matter if i type it out or copy & paste, I get all these extra returns between paragraphs and lines.. it looks awful & makes the posts so long. I try going back in to edit and take them out and I do that and it looks fine in editing but as soon as I hit save changes and it reloads the page, the damn returns are back! Sometimes even more than there were previously. The worst amount of them happens at the begining of the page, there is like 5 returns before my heading.. eg:
>top of message square here
Heading ends up here........ ![]()
Can you please help me with this. I spend an hour sometimes trying to edit a message
Ok I have just noticed a new problem... I am in one of my categories, I am posting new messages, and when I hit create message it ends up going into the community news & announcements category.. what is up with this?.. does anyone know why this is happening....
Hi lissa, I don't see extra space here on your posts, can you link to an example where that's happening.
As for your second question, you can select a different category when you're starting a topic. It's a drop down below your posting box.
Ok yep i can do that, here is the link for one in particular that drove me nuts last night, http://crystalgatechronicles.lefora.com/2009/03/31/humans/page1/
you can see the extra returns on the first message at the top before the heading, then i managed to sort out the rest but as you scroll through the replies you will see about the 3rd one down is all over the place and the last one too.. im going through it right now as im posting new skills in the General skills list.
As for the category, I know about the drop down, but if you are already in a category, like General skills and I hit start a topic, shouldnt it automatically go there, when I save every 3rd or 4th topic ends up in c.n & a and I have to change it.. its weird
Also you will see why I asked about the beta pages.. doing this is message form is a bit of a drag, but I love lefora so Im dealing.. (well is reconsidering the love part after that joke - was nearly hospitalized - maybe just like a lot till she gets over it lol)
Chief, I have created a series of posts in my test forum here to demonstrate extra line returns being added when copying and pasting, editing and quoting.
Hope this helps.
thanks for helping with that hal, its driving me nuts, and it just gets worse when I try to edit it out.. im having to put everything into notepad first even then it doesnt always work, seems to be worse if I centre the heading..
In for a penny as they say.... well i had read posts regarding this problem a few weeks ago but I had not experienced it till tonight... I am now getting lovely adverts for meetig asian women, who I am sure are lovely girls, but my members and I have really no need nor desire to be looking at these kinds of adds.. anyway to get rid of them.. up till now all the adverts were roleplay orientated.. http://crystalgatechronicles.lefora.com/forum/ link to the rp forum if you need it .. thanks again..
thanks for the links lissa and the detailed topic hal9000, we'll look into this.
Any Luck Chief? Its still happening to me and its driving me nuts, my posts look disgusting
we'll try improve this, but for the time being, the best thing to do is if you're copying any text from other webpages that make the posting editor go screwey, would be to copy the text into a plain text editor, such as notepad, then copy it out into your post, this will remove any special html formatting that might be causing a problem.
I have done this Chief, I did it the first time it happened, it doesnt help. In fact it makes it worse... dont ask me how but it does. I post it into note pad, I take every single return out, copy it, paste it, and ta da! 2-4 returns that werent even there appear between every paragraph. It really is driving me crazy..
hrmm, i don't know why that's happening. When it goes into notepad, it removes all the formatting. Maybe you have your default fonts changed on your system and it's causing errors?
If you're using Internet Explorer, can you try the same actions with the Firefox webbrowser (it's free and more standards complaint) - www.firefox.com. Let me know if you have the same issues in Firefox.
I have noticed that the extra returns seem more prevalent with long text, though not in the posted text but text added afterwards. Here's an example.
I copied some Latin test text from lipsum.com and posted it, then added a few lines of my own at the end with a single line spacing. After hitting SUBMIT the line spacing doubled or more.

Single line space above this line.
Single line spacing above this line too
Single line spacing above this line, then hit return
and no line spacing above. Now hit submit.
OK see the extra line spacing that's been added.
Now pasted the Latin test text into notepad and saved it. Opened it and copied it, then pasted it below.

Now you can see the original paragraph breaks have been preserved.
Single line space above this line
Single line space above this then hit return
Next hit submit.
As you can see all the original paragraph spacing and line spacing has been preserved. So I think the real trick is to copy the text from another website, past into Notepad and SAVE IT. Then copy back and paste here. Seems to fix this issue somewhat ?
thanks Hal, I will try the save option and see what happens
I am still having this issue with extra returns and spaces. It is driving me crazy. Last night I spent 3 hours, posting 3 messages because I had to continually go back and edit them and everytime i did it the returns and spaces end up in a different place so i have to go back and edit them again. Pasting into notebook doesnt help, i do that and i get the same issue.
Its driving me nuts because alot of 'messages' arent really messages they are info pages for my roleplay site. This started happening after the upgrade to the editor and when the html option was taken out. Honestly I really need this resolved as I dont have hours upon hours to spend getting my posts to look right.
I dont know if the issue is with the migration from msn and if there were bugs in the msn pages, perhaps that has something to do with it, i dont know, I only know that Im at the end of my rope with it. My pages look terrible and I look like a kindagarten poster. Please can some one help me.
sorry I forgot to add the link.. this is one of the pages Im talking about.

was the original post copied and pasted or typed directly into the post editor?
Both Chief, it happens when I copy and paste, it happens when I type it from scratch, it happens when I copy it into notepad as well... I can erase the whole thing and type it word for word again and it still happens... i dont know what else to tell you..
