How do I modify "Spam Management"

I would like both members and guests to post on the forum.  However, "Spam Management" has been too aggressive.  Posts by both members and guests are gobbled up and a cryptic "404" page is left behind.  I would like to turn the feature off and monitor spam myself.  What do I do?

It's not possible to turn spam protection off, however, after 'teaching' the system for about a week, your forum should be good to go.  I see your forum is 2 weeks old, so I'm not sure if you've had a lot of activity and a lot of incorrect spam catches for the whole 2 weeks or just a few days.

I would say give it a few more days of checking your spam folder a few times a day to make sure everybody is getting through correctly.  If that still doesn't help you, then please send me an email at 'chief -at- lefora.com' and we'll look into the matter.  Please include a link to this post and a link to your forum.  Thank you.

Thanks for the info Chief,

We are still having problems with "404" and most recently "500" error messages when people post.  However, I will wait some more time for the spam filter to get its kinks out.

Just as a constructive thought -- I have used spam filters for emails on and off.  My general opinion of them is that they are more trouble than the problem they intend to solve.  It might be better to allow moderators and administrators to decide how, or if, a spam filter should be used.

IMHO -- forums ought to have guest posters (those who transiently come into a forum for information, but leave just as quickly).  True, guest posters are more likely to be abusive than members of the forum but they also challenge forum members, and some times they give valuable information and/or opinions.  It would be a pity if a forum is effectively closed to guest posters because the spam blocker will not let them post.

Thanks for considering my 2 cents.

Hi,
I've indentified the problem and fixed it, the change should be live on your forum within a few days.

You're points about spam filtering are all valid, though turns out this time the spam filter wasn't to blame - we have some code that prevents duplicate posts, but it seemed to forget how to count, and decided a lot of unique posts were duplicate. Anway the fix is in the pipeline, then we get to see how the spam filter holds up.

(I'll try and remember to post back here when the change is live)
