Upcoming changes to how 'Deleting' posts works on your forum
You will now have the ability to 'undelete' or recover deleted posts at any point in time.
When a post is deleted within a topic, it will now be collapsed into a smaller area and display to members that it has been 'deleted'. The same goes for posts marked as Spam, they will collapse into a thing view and show as marked as spam. These changes have a few advantages:
1. It allows admins to see what mods have been deleting and make changes if needed.
2. It allows admins and mods to undelete a post at any time.
3. It allows Lefora to 'number' replies, so that in a conversation, you can easily comment about 'Reply #22...' (in the previous system, that number would technically change).
4. It will make your forum topics load faster, because in the past, we had to dynamically put posts onto different pages if previous replies were deleted, bumping everything up.
5. The 'reply count' and the 'post count' of a topic or category will now be an accurate reflection of all the posts in the forum (as deleted ones are technically counted in this number).
For 'Guest' posts that are flagged as spam, they will act the same way and not appear in the topic. An admin will have to 'unspam' it from their admin panel. We'll be adding more options around spam notifications and feedback to members in the future.
Deleting a topic will behave in the current manner and a topic will be fully deleted, including all it's replies. You'll have a chance to undo this action before leaving the page.
The thing to really be aware of is that when you delete a post inside a topic, the count of the replies in that topic and its category will not decrease. These changes will also significantly improve the performance of Lefora as we continue to scale towards the 100,000 forum mark.
Fantastic! A really great addition.
Thanks for implementing this.
Hi, yes a great function.
I can see the collapsed post now marked "hidden post - deleted".
Please explain what steps I must take to "undelete" it.
Thank you for your fantastic service!

The undelete function isn't there yet, it should appear shortly after the scheduled server maintenance next week. ( Chief posted about that here: http://support.lefora.com/2009/06/06/service-announcement-scheduled-downtime-wed-june-1/page1/ )
When it's enabled the undelete button will be right there in that collapsed post next to the "hidden post - deleted" text, should be one week at most. You'll be able to un-spam spammed posts the same way. Sorry about the wait, it's almost there.
Why is it necessary to have "deleted" display to members? I really would prefer that either no change is made or that the "deleted" memo only be displayed to admin. One of the major features that I really liked about Lefora was not having a "deleted" indication displayed to the membership at large. In fact, it is one of the pivotal reasons why I chose to move my forum here to begin with. I must say I am extremely unhappy with this change.
There is absolutely no reason for "deleted" to be exposed to the membership. The individual poster knows when his post has been deleted; there is no need to erect a "sign" stating such. All it does is embarrass individual posters and invite members to question the admin on the board. I could care less about post count, I am more interested in quietly keeping the peace, and I do mean quietly! I urge you to re-consider.
Hi ghhshirley
It doesn't show who posted the deleted message. There's just a little blank that says "hidden post - deleted". There is no attribution to who made the post.
It would be nice if only admin saw the blank footprint. But for us, sometimes we have an 'oops' getting rid of a double post. This shouldn't upset too many just seeing a blank space.

I agree with this. Admins and mods should only be the ones able to see those. The general public (members and non-members) need not see it for the reasons stated above.

It upsets me! I knew that the name of who posted the deleted item would be omitted when I posted my complaint above. That was not my point. I am very unhappy with the idea of the general membership being able to see that a post was deleted and see absolutely no need for them to see it. I am very, very, unhappy with this change. Like I said, not having "deleted post" appear to the general public and membership was one of my major reasons for choosing Lefora. Major enough that I may be forced to make another move.
Thank you t-cell. Its nice to know I am not the only one who has a serious problem with this.
hi ghhshirley, i will send you an email to follow-up about this and learn more about your frustrations.

No change would mean we would still see the blank "hidden-deleted post" and not have the ability to Undelete. If my vote counts, I want the undelete ability. Whether or not the blank "hidden-deleted post" is visible would have been an issue already, before this undelete opportunity came up.
Two issues:
- displaying notification of deleted posts
- recovering deleted posts. ("the ability to 'undelete' or recover deleted posts at any point in time" as per the Chief's original post above.)
Displaying the blank "hidden-deleted post" is this a new feature? Or has it always existed? Irrespective of whether the display is changed or not, we need the ability to recover. Functionality first, aesthetics second. I can support your need to have visual control, but let's get the Undelete, please.
Ps I tested it today, not in application.
I agree we should have the ability to recover a deleted post, but i also agree only Admin and mods should see this on there screens!!!
you will see deleted posts on your screens so that you have the option of undeleting.

I agree. I don't like this new feature. I have a closed forum for only invited members and I don't need to keep a censorship or have any problems with spam as I know all the members of the forum.
But some of the treads work in a way, that I start the topic and then when people respond I will edit my original post and delete the answer the member gave. I have already recieved complains from more of my members.
Please change it back to what is was before or at least give the admins the choice the choose what they want for their forum.
We've made a 'hack' so that savvy admins can hide the deleted post markers. But be aware this will alter the number of posts displayed on a page (normally 20), so that if you delete one or two, then the page will only show 18 or 19 posts. Also, it will hide the ability to 'undelete' a post on future visits to a thread.
Copy and paste this code into your CSS (Forum Admin -> Appearances -> CSS)
.post_minimised {display:none;}
Nice solution - should keep everyone happy. Hopefully.
Thanks for this solution.
I'm sure I'll get alot of positive response from the members of my forum.
I like that there is the option to delete then undelete if I feel like one of the mods shouldn't have deleted something. However, I trust their judgement, which is why they are mods, and don't ever question what they are doing.
Options, updates and other features are always great, but personally I like the way it was before mainly because of the amount of posts per page now. This is especially bothersome to me in our "for sale" section. We delete posts that are more than three weeks old, and posts that are your standard chit chat. We allow ads, thats it. If people want to ask questions they are asked to do so with PM's so we end up deleting a lot of posts that aren't ads. With the three week rule and ads only policy we tend to have a ton of deleted posts. With the current system I have the hidden post/deleted marker hidden with the css posted above. Now, as you stated would be the case, there are pages with zero posts and some with just a few posts.. Everything looks broken up and is somewhat messy.
I like where you guys are headed with this and I back simplicity on your end which is why I understand why you implemented this feature. However, I personally liked the way it was before. I'm not worried about post counts or anything like that and the old pages loaded fast enough even when full of images.
Is there any way to reverse this? I'm not bagging on what you are doing at all, don't take it the wrong way.
Lefora, backed 1000%
thanks man for understanding. there is no way to revert back, the only options are to display them as 'deleted' or use that hack to hide the deleted posts (but then a page may look near empty). We have to do this for server scaling, the dynamic amount of posts per page was slowing all of lefora down. So this is the decision that has to be used going forward, thanks again for understanding that in your comments.
