Private forums ad placement
the new Ads are intrusive and my chatbox is no longer visible even if its the top most widget... I didnt even mind the ads before but now on top of the new placement they are VIDEO ads!? they are slowing my forum down now... its absurd is what it is. I would upgrade my forum but 20 bucks a month is ridiculous.
Annoying ads tend to make people install Adblock Plus which defeats the purpose of having a Ad supported site. So I agree, any type of flashing, animation, or noise is a bad idea. The other side of the equation is that in order to supply the Servers and Bandwidth plus people to keep things working, means Lefora needs to make the money somehow. It is Business.
I also agree the 19.95/mo is too high for a sparsely attended Forum. They probably need a rate that would make it more attractive based on such smaller needs. Perhaps $6.95 for the same BW as the free option but no adds.

yea well when it only costs 10 bucks a year to buy your own domain, and 5 bucks a month to host said domain it would be cheaper to just make my own forum lol.
Like I said though I don't care about ads being there, its the new placement and the fact that they went from non interactive ads to VIDEO ads in the matter of one day that I have an issue with.
The ad I'm seeing just now for Fantasy Football doesn't even fit in the sidebar... About one sixth of it is missing from the right.
The ad doesn't slow down my broswer though...

no worries I fixed it for myself at least via http://opindian.com/blog/2009/02/25/adblock-solution-for-safari-4-windows-and-mac/
The domain cost is nothing for the register so they just make money. Hosting does cost and the software for a Forum took time and money. That is why I think the $6.95/mo not unreasonable (I do prefer Annual type payments and not reoccurring monthly charges). I hate the idea of blocking ads when a Host needs to get revenue to provide the service. Plus not all people will do this, instead they simply will not revisit your Forum since it annoyed them.
I think Lefora needs to do some brainstorming on this (The VIP program is not the best way to get around this issue).
Of course, it's only private forums that are affected by this...
Hi, somebody from the Lefora Team here.
Apologies if our email announcement didn't reach you. Last week, we sent out an announcement over email to admins of Private Forums that our agreements with the ad networks on private forums required us to move around one ad position to the top of the sidebar. (This did not affect public forums). We did not change the ad formats around, so if you are seeing a new ad type now, that is random, and may not be there tomorrow, or it might have been there in the past and you just didn't notice it in the old location.
You are free to switch to a Public forum, as those ad positions did not change, or you can upgrade to our Lefora Pro plan, which as Mattb4 pointed out, helps to cover the cost of hosting, storage, bandwidth, and a number of other features, like free security patches, new feature releases, and tons of other little items that makes Lefora unique compared to other forum software. We're in this for the long haul and want to offer a service that other admins want to tell their friends about.
If the announcement email didn't reach your inbox last week, I'm sorry that the change was out of the blue for you. We really want admins to enjoy using Lefora and not have any frustrations. If you would like to discuss this more, I would be happy to, please send me an email at 'chief -at- lefora.com' and I will respond promptly.
