Need recommendation for dealing with spammers leaving porn on my forum
Hi. We have had our first "porn link" posted on my medical forum. Luckily, a member brought it to my attention relatively quickly and I removed the post and banned teh member from my site. The question is that if I get more of this happening, what should I do?
Currently, my forum is set as a public forum with no approval necessary to become a member. I cannot find information here regarding what is involved if I choose to change it to the public, but with approval option. If a person wants to become a member under that, do they need to type me some sentences explaining their reason for wanting to join? That would prevent automatic crawlers better than if they simply set up a user name and password and I just approve them. If so, how do I even change my settings to do so?
I am really looking forward to getting advice on this, as our forum helps a lot of people with a rare disease. There aren't many forums for this disease, so I would hate to see our forum go down due to porn posts, etc.
Thanks!!
Deborah

The settings to change this are in Forum Admin > Settings > Privacy. Simply uncheck the bottom box.
Typing a message when applying to join is optional. However, pending applications DO show email addresses, so you have the option of manually emailing the applicant to check if they have a reason for joining...
Did you label the unwanted post as 'spam' before banning the member ?
If you label those kind of posts as 'spam' a couple of times instead of just deleting them, the spam filter will be able to catch them automatically the next time around and automatically bring those kind of posts to your spam folder before it gets posted publicly.
You won't then have to change your settings from public to private and worry about pending applications and other hassles of a private forum.
