Re: How do I add links to other sites on my sidebar?
August 26, 2008 by cookies
So it is impossible to use hyperlinks in signatures I take it?-scytheron
It is possible, but you don't need to put any bbcode or anything, it just automatically detects urls, so when editing your profile just put for example:
'check out http://www.lefora.com for free forum hosting'
just plain text, (remember to put http:// at the front that is important) and it will magically turn into a link as it does when making posts - you can't change the displayed text, that will always be the full url, but it gets the job done.

I'm trying to find a workaround, but don't know how long it will take as the problem is them not us - I need to find an alternative approach.

I'm very curious about the bug you mention of the quote text appearing in red at the top of the page - I haven't seen this and can't recreate it, it works fine for me on all and any pages.
Is it happening consistently for you?
Any more information you can give about the circumstance that bring it about would be a great help.
Thanks.

Hi,
yes this was a temporary error for very short period of time earlier today, it only effected people using the laser jals theme. It has since been fixed and everything should be normal again.
Forums remained functional during that time, they just looked rather silly.
Sorry for any troubles.
remember link to your forum in your posts here

It certainly helps if people can actually find your forum easily.
Might seem obvious, but it seems to have been slipping a lot of peoples minds lately ;p

My bad, I was testing on a different version, you'd want:
#community_menu #app_members {display: none}
Re: Only Admins Can Sticky Posts?
August 25, 2008 by cookies
Then I'm afraid there's not much I can do.
As I said earlier they shouldn't be able to do that.
If it happens again please post here with a working link to the topic in question,
Thanks.
Re: Only Admins Can Sticky Posts?

can you give me a link to the post that is sticky so I can investigate?
Re: Widgets are cut in half on my forum...
August 25, 2008 by cookies
The basic problem is you're widgets are simply too big for the sidebar, if they have any size options making them smaller is the best thing to do.
If you use a theme with a sidebar on the right there would be room for them to overflow (though it will look messy) - currently with your selected theme there is no where for them to expand into as the left margin isn't a gaurenteed size and would break the layout.
Re: Only Admins Can Sticky Posts?
August 25, 2008 by cookies
There isn't much to say other than that is the default behaviour already.
Do you have a specific case where a member has set a sticky?

Threaded topics will be displayed as flat, though they will maintain their logical order. That is they will not be forced into chronological order which would make them extremely difficult to follow. We have found that most of the time this doesn't negitavely impact the readability of the topic unless a large number different branches of conversation were started.
Converting them all to flat provides a more consistent experience, particularly when it comes to interacting with the topic, and it could certainly confuse new/casual visitors to your forum if the interface was variable.
Secondly to answer mattb4:
Initially it will be fixed and probably at 20, this is still uncertain and we'd appreciate feedback on how many posts per page people find useful - if it turns out there is no happy medium to satisfy the majority then expect this to be made adjustable. As you've probably noticed here at lefora we're commited to a clean and simple experience so we think very hard before exposing another option however small it may seem.
As for the CSS and images, it will be exacty the same as when you change theme now (which isn't perfect in that it will reset some customisations). So we do advise a quick copy and paste backup of any css you have before changing any themes. This isn't ideal and is something we will improve, but I'm not sure if it'll be solved before the new themes are published.
Also some of the underlying html has changed so some CSS may no longer apply, but most of it should transfere accross no problem.
Hope this answers your questions and concerns.
Re: Is there a way to block the members tab?
August 24, 2008 by cookies
Hi,
there is no robust way to do this, but you can hide prevent the tab from showing with css, paste the following in the css box on the admin themes page and save:
#app_members {display: none}
This will only hide the link, it will still be active, if people type the correct url directly or have a bookmark - we can't actually disable the page.
Though may I ask what is the privacy concern you have? we display very little information about users on that page, and anyone will still be able to see a members profile by clicking their username.
Re: Remove "Sticky"
August 24, 2008 by cookies
As mattb4 hints, it should be impossible for a non-admin to set a post as sticky, and taking a quick look at your forum I only see sticky topics set by admins.
The problem is right now the only way to unsticky a post is to edit it, and the only person that can edit it is the original poster - so to remove those stickies you need to ask the original poster to edit their topic post.
Goodnews is that in the new view/layout which you see here on support this is no longer a problem. Any admin or mod can set and unset sticky on any topic quickly and easily from the topic admin actions. This view will be made available to all very very soon.

The colour you want is the named colour 'transparent', this snippet:
#content, #main {background-color:transparent;}
Should probably do the trick.
Re: How do I add links to other sites on my sidebar?
August 22, 2008 by cookies
Hi, this is a known problem and a fix is in the works.
A simple workaround is to just add multiple weblinks widgets, not ideal I realise but it will get the job done.
Also if your familiar with html you can use the custom html widget instead.
Hope this helps.

In response to scytherons earlier question:
How would I add in my background? I've been playing with firebug and cant get anything to work.-scytheron
I'm not quite sure I follow exactly, you want to put a background on the whole page or just in the header behind the logo image you've put?
If it's the header, then you either need to combine the logo and background into a single image, or put the background on the header element, and put the logo probably in the forum descripition tor title element, using a little trick of adding a large padding-bottom value and putting background image in the padding using background-position (theres a topic on support doing something similar witht the page footer).
If you want the whole page then I think #page should do.
Re: Aug 21st - Sneak Preview some upcoming changes...
August 22, 2008 by cookies
I think to clarify mattb4 is explaining how you can use quoting now in your current themes, and to further his sugestion, to link a quote to a username its best to use an opening tag of the form quote:username] . It doesn't have to be a username for example you could put anything you are citing from there.
Easy to get started - Free, hosted, and just a few clicks away. Save time moderating with our community tools and anti-spam support.-www.lefora.com
Of course if quoting one person, the quote button in the new themes will save the typing, it may overwrite the text currently but thats due to change.
Also the syntax for quoting isn't written in stone yet either and may be changed, but for now that is the correct information.

We haven't been able to recreate this, works fine here.
Re: Sort or Re-order a Topic?
August 18, 2008 by cookies
Sorry thats not possible, and we wont be adding any support for that, it is to obscure and there are so many more widely used features we have to work on.
The best you can do is create the topics you want as sticky in reverse order to what you want the display to be.
Re: CSS drop shadows?
August 18, 2008 by cookies
You'd think that would be easy, but no, the world is cruel to web developers.
Good news! there is a css3 option that does just that with one line.
Bad news, only Safari supports it, (Firefox is sort of adding it in the next version, when ever that gets released). Its probably in Opera somewhere to.
'css box-shadow' is the thing to google.
It is not in ie6, ie7 or the upcomming ie8.
So it is pretty much useless, as most people use ie or older firefox.
You can do it the old fashioned way, with images, but even thats a pain as you need to use various tricks to get it to work in ie6 or changing your forums colour will ruin it.
If you want to go this route, then #content-wrapper is the selector for the thing you and the play with and probably #footer to for the end image.
Sorry for not giving a step by step here, but the basic fact is it is far harder than it should be, and is out of our control. But this should be enough to get you started if you feel adventurous.
Re: Help! Why some words can't show up??
August 17, 2008 by cookies
Ah I thought some copy and paste may be involved, I think the fact it went throguh 2 different editors is the real problem - looking at it, the email editor you used had some errors, and it didn't resize properly; which was actually fortuante, if it had worked properly all song titles would have dissapeared.
Anyway, we should certainly make lefora ignore rather than hide html font tags.
But if you havent tried it, I reccomend giving the 'media editor' a try. To put photos in your post rather than at the end simply put the address/url of the image in your post text where you would like it to appear - no need to use the embed pictures button. The editor will ignore any font styles when you copy and paste, so unless you need those, it is quicker and easier to use.
Thanks again for your information about the matter.
Re: Sort or Re-order a Topic?
August 17, 2008 by cookies
Sorry your original post seemed to have got overlooked, but what is it you actualy want to achive?
Currently you cant re-order the topic list, it is always sorted by the time of the last reply.
How do you want it sorted?
Re: "sticky" not working?
August 17, 2008 by cookies
Currently this can be achieved by selecting 'edit' from the more actions drop down on the topic, and then unselecting the sticky checkbox and saving the change.
This does require the admin of the original topic to be unsticked to perform, and certainly isn't the most intuative - we have a simpler system complete now actually - it is just undergoing testing currently.
Until then the above should work, hope this helps.
Re: Help! Why some words can't show up??
August 17, 2008 by cookies
Hi,
so I've been looking into this problem, and have found that the problem is due to the use of html font tags, which lefora does not support.
May I ask how did you make the post? and did you intend to use differnt size fonts? I'm just trying to figure out how they got there, so we can prevent it in the future.
Anyway the easiest way to get those titles to appear until we figure out how this happened would be to post them again underneath using the 'media editor' (the one with the embed picture/video and upload buttons) as that just uses plain text.
Thanks.

this is a confirmed bug it will be fixed soon.
There shouldn't be any forum problems resulting from this (other than not seeing it), so everything should work as usual for your new member.
Re: Browser testing.

I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it may be a result of the system interpretting that as some broken html due to the < > useage.
I belive we have some inconsitancies in that area a I'll look into.
Thanks.
